Need More Tour Guides

The Tribute WTC Visitor Center is looking for additional volunteers to serve as guides for the walking tours it conducts three times daily on weekdays and four times on weekend afternoons.

Those eligible to serve as tour guides include family members of those who died during the World Trade Center attacks; rescue workers; those who were in the buildings that day or on Feb. 26, 1993, when the Trade Center was bombed the first time, and survived; those who volunteered for the recovery and clean-up work at the site, and neighborhood residents.

In conducting the tours of various points around the perimeter of the site, they are asked to explain their personal connection to what transpired. Volunteers undergo a training course that offers information of the history of lower Manhattan, speaking in public, and managing a group, as well as emotional guidance. They will then be asked to devote at least eight hours each month to serving as tour guides. There are currently 160 guides; program director Lynn Tierney hopes to increase that number to 300 by next year.
