Patrol Duties

School Safety Agents patrol school buildings and surrounding areas to maintain order, preserve the peace, and safeguard property. They may be required to work nights, weekends, and holidays.

Feb. 27 is also the last day to file for an exam leading to Bridge and Tunnel Officer positions in the Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority. The starting salary is $36,900, which rises to $52,714 after five years. The multiple-choice test is set for May 19.

To qualify, by the date of appointment candidates must have a high school diploma or a GED. There is no work-related experience requirement.

To be appointed, candidates must be 18 years old and New York State residents. Appointees also need to have a driver's license. Individuals with any moving violations, license suspensions, or an accident record may be disqualified.

Bridge and Tunnel Officers collect tolls, resolve problems with EZ Pass traffic lanes, and perform various other duties at TBTA facilities.

New hires must complete a 12-month probationary period during which they must pass a firearms test and meet disciplinary and performance standards.

The exams for both titles will test candidates' abilities in written comprehension and expression, memorization, and problem sensitivity. The test will also gauge candidates' skills in deductive and inductive reasoning, information ordering, spatial orientation, and imagining how something would look when it is moved around or when the parts are rearranged.

Candidates must pass a medical and psychological assessment and a drug and alcohol screening. They also must meet specific established physical requirements.

Further information and copies of the exam notices can be obtained online at www.nyc.gov/dcas or by calling 212-669-1357.
