Postal Carrier Jobs in B'klyn, S.I., Queens

By REUVEN BLAU

The Triborough District of the U.S. Postal Service is accepting applications by phone or Internet for the 473-C battery exam leading to City Carrier jobs at post offices in Staten Island, Brooklyn, and Queens.

Filing is set to close Jan. 26. The starting wage is $19 an hour. Individuals can apply online at www.usps.com/employment by clicking on "apply for exam," or by calling 1-866-999-8777.

Job Requirements

Candidates must be 18 years old and have a high school diploma or GED. They also must be U.S. citizens or possess a green card. Applicants also need to have a valid driver's license, a safe driving record, and at least two years of driving experience.

Due to the high volume of calls, candidates are urged to apply on-line, which takes approximately two minutes.

All applicants must take a multiple-choice exam. Candidates will be sent a scheduling package that includes the exam dates, time and location, and material to prepare for the test.

City Carriers travel on planned routes to deliver and collect mail. They typically cover their route on foot or by vehicle, and must be able to work outdoors. Carriers are required to carry mailbags on their shoulders that can weigh 35 pounds or more. They also have to load and unload sacks of mail and parcels weighing as much as 70 pounds.
