Schwartzbaum Re-Elected As Warden Head

By REUVEN BLAU

Sidney Schwartzbaum, the president of the union representing high-ranking Correction Department supervisors, and his entire slate were elected unopposed for new two-year terms last week.

SID SCHWARTZBAUM: Starts second decade. SID SCHWARTZBAUM: Starts second decade. Mr. Schwartzbaum has led the 160-member Assistant Deputy Wardens/Deputy Wardens Association since 1997. "I am honored to represent some of the hardest-working civil servants in the field of law-enforcement, whose span of control and scope of responsibility on any given tour of duty is remarkable," he said in a statement.

Union Vice President Vincent Caputo and the rest of the slate were also re-elected unopposed. They are: Secretary Yvonne Jackson, Treasurer Nicasio Velazquez, and Representative Bradley Averill.

Over the years, Mr. Schwartzbaum has been a vocal critic of former Correction Commissioner Bernard B. Kerik and ex-Inspector General Michael Caruso, charging that they unfairly promoted and demoted officers based solely on their political affiliations and personal ties to management. He has also worked with the department to revamp and clarify many of its outdated regulations.
