      To the Editor: If the labor movement wants to step into the 21st Century, canceling the annual workers' Labor Day Parade in New York City is not the way to do it. We often say proudly that New York City is a labor town - and that underlines our responsibility to showcase labor strength in public events.

REMEMBERING ZURLO
      To the Editor: With a heavy heart I must inform you that on Aug. 12 Joseph Rocco Zurlo died. Joe Zurlo was President of the A & B Laborers, Local 924 of District Council 37 from 1964 to his retirement in 1991. He also served as DC 37 President from 1969 to 1983 and was an International Vice President in the parent union AFSCME.

THE ROAD TO RUIN
      To the Editor: Mel Levy's recent column (Aug. 17 issue) about the safety of our bridges and tunnels mentioned that there has been no collapse and that the West Side (or "Miller'') Highway was removed when inspection showed deterioration.
