THE CHIEF-LEADER welcomes letters from its readers for publication. RUDY DIDN'T PREPARE Rudy Didn't Prepare To the Editor: I was perplexed to read Father Brian Jordan's letter, "Uncivil to Giuliani," since criticism of presidential candidate and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani should not be considered as being "uncivil." Sadly, Father Jordan was myopic in his defense of Rudy Giuliani. His letter focused on Rudy's post-9/11 image without any assessment of the Mayor's performance during his 2,790 days in office prior to the 9/11 terrorist attack. The question is what, if anything, did the Giuliani administration (1994-2001) do following the 1993 World Trade Center attack to prepare the city for any potential future terrorist attacks? A review of Rudy's performance as New York City's Mayor prior to the 9/11/01 terrorist attack reveal a myriad of issues which he neglected to address, including the failure of the city to require the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey - which was responsible for the World Trade Center - to upgrade safety procedures within the former Twin Towers and to adhere to the city's building and safety codes and standards; the ineffectiveness of the FDNY Motorola radios, and the placement of the city's Office of Emergency Management at 7 WTC (and which was never used on 9/11), among other issues. The issue of "civility" should not come into question when assessing and discussing the truth of former Mayor Rudy Giuliani's pre-9/11 performance. ARNOLD KOROTKIN |
