CITY PLUMBER POSTS ARE NOW AVAILABLE

Starting Pay Is $42 an Hour; Need Experience; Filing to Close Aug. 21; Taking On-Line Applications

The Department of Citywide Administrative Services is accepting applications for an exam leading to Plumber jobs.

Applications must be submitted by Aug. 21. The starting salary is $42.41 an hour. The multiple-choice test is scheduled for Nov. 10. There is a $60 filing fee.

Job Qualifications

To qualify, by the last day of filing candidates must have five years of full-time experience as a plumber, acquired within the last 10 years. Individuals with three years of experience who have also worked as a plumber's helper or apprentice or graduated from an approved trade school can also apply.

Candidates must be city residents within 90 days of the date they are appointed. Some agencies, however, do not require city residency. New hires should consult the agency's personnel office at the time of appointment.

Appointees also must have a valid New York State driver's license. Individuals with serious moving violations, license suspensions or an accident record may be disqualified.

The exam will test candidates' knowledge of materials and methods used in plumbing work, as well as usage of tools, fittings and equipment. The exam will also gauge candidates' skills in the plumbing section of the New York City Building Code, plan reading, safety procedures, and principles of supervision. The passing score is 70 percent.

Individuals who have a Master Plumber license may be selectively certified to positions and may be given preferred consideration for positions requiring that certification.

DCAS is also accepting applications for a promotion leading to the title for city workers. The exam leads to jobs in city agencies, but not the Health and Hospitals Corporation. Individuals looking to apply for HHC positions must submit a separate application and filing fee for Exam No. 7024.

Can Apply On-Line

Plumbers perform work relating to installation, alteration, maintenance, and repair of piping of gas, potable water, plumbing and drainage systems.
