Queens District Attorney Richard Brown is to be commended for pushing legislation to allow Assistant District Attorneys (ADAs) in the outer boroughs to reside outside New York City. As you pointed out in your April 27 editorial, it is unfair to allow Manhattan ADAs to live anywhere, while outer-borough ADAs must live in the city. More ... On April 24, a transit worker was struck and killed by a train in New York City. Transit work is dangerous, and unfortunately, our TWU Local 100 members sometimes pay the ultimate sacrifice while on duty. Our 24-hour system is under constant maintenance and repair, while moving 8 million riders a day. Work continues during service. More ... In order to enter negotiations on the Uniformed Firefighters' Association contract, we had to first agree to restructure the starting pay of new hires. This wasn't negotiable. This was stated as something that had to be done before any contract negotiations could begin. More ... Please allow me to set the record straight regarding some of the comments made by Gregory Floyd in your April 13 issue on his selection as the new President of Teamsters Local 237. Although he apparently talked at length about "his" plan to build affordable housing and make mortgages available for union members, that plan was established some time ago by the New York State AFL-CIO. In a letter to THE CHIEF published in the April 6 issue, former New York City Employees' Retirement System Executive Director John Murphy assails the current Executive Director of NYCERS as unqualified. He says: "so it is reasonable to assume that this appointment was knowingly made in violation of civil service law. More ... I would like to issue a warning that the Civil Service Technical Guild's executive board is infected with a virulent strain of Hoof-and-Mouth Disease. Several members of the board have recently expressed or exhibited homophobic, anti-Semitic, anti-union views and even used very offensive language over the last few months. More ...
