APPLY NOW FOR STATE COMPUTER POSITIONS

Start at $32,659; Get $42G With College Degree; Education, Experience Will Determine Who Is Appointed

The state Department of Civil Service is continuously accepting applications for Information Technology Specialist jobs.

The basic starting rate is $32,659. Candidates with a bachelor's degree in an applicable computer-related area can expect to receive a starting salary of $42,230, and individuals with a master's degree will get $43,610.

Ranked on Background

There is no written exam. Individuals will be ranked based on an evaluation of candidates' education and experience. Applications must be completed on-line at www.cs.state.ny.us under the jobs section and subsequent examination announcement heading.

The majority of positions are available in the Albany area, but the state is also looking to fill vacancies in the city.

By the date of filing, candidates must have an associate's degree in computer science or management information systems. Candidates can also qualify with 60 college credits, which must include 15 in computer science courses. Individuals with one year of work-related experience can also apply.

Qualifying experience includes practically all areas of computer service work, such as: network, server, storage, and systems management; telecommunications; information technology, technical support and training; computer installation, diagnosis and repair; technical writing; Internet/Intranet development, design, and maintenance; information technology project management; and computer programming, design, or testing.

Appropriate part-time and volunteer experience will be accepted on a pro-rated basis. State residency is not required.

Technology Specialists conduct or assist in business/system analysis. Their duties include helping in analyzing the impact of implementing new or modified systems on computer resources, and a myriad of other computer-related tasks.

Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will be required to complete a detailed on-line education-and-experience questionnaire. Those answers will be matched against criteria identified for current vacancies. Ratings will be determined each time an agency requests a list of candidates for a particular position.

Candidates whose education and experience closely matches an agency's needs will be placed higher on the eligible list. During the on-line application process, candidates will be able to input specific job preferences such as where in the state they wish to work and what they would like.

Applicants must enter accurate information regarding their education and experience. The Department of Civil Service will remove names of candidates who are unable to verify their credentials during job interviews.
