Actually, cops are starting to sense that bad smell again, and that's because it's contract time. The only result that the last decade of contract negotiations between the cops and the City of New York has created is advancing the stages of the NYPD's decomposition. More ... Last week, as a District Council 37 Delegate, I received a letter of appreciation from DC 37 Executive Director Lillian Roberts for my "vote of confidence" in her leadership. I did not vote for Sister Roberts. It is customary for the winning candidate to congratulate his or her supporters and then reach out to opponents with an olive branch. More ... I read with interest your latest article on the lifting of the residency requirement on certain city jobs (Feb. 16 issue). Councilman Jackson's strong opposition to the plan baffles me, however. I can understand encouraging Sanitation workers to live in the city so they could be on hand in case of a snow emergency, but they are not required to live in New York City. More ... As a 20-year career firefighter and the possessor of two college degrees, I find it laughable for you to suggest that the 13 accused officers bypassed the civil service merit system (Feb. 16 editorial). The educational requirement for promotion was implemented by Tom Von Essen, a firefighter who never passed a promotional exam yet became Fire Commissioner. More ... |
