COURT REPORTER JOBS IN CITY AND SUBURBS

Starting Pay Is $59,400; Need Field Experience; Filing Closes Feb. 16; Senior Clerk Jobs Also Available

The Office of Court Administration is accepting applications for an exam leading to Court Reporter positions.

Applications must be postmarked by Feb. 16. The exam is scheduled for April 21.

Starting pay is $59,400. Appointees in New York City, Nassau, Rockland, Suffolk, and Westchester counties will receive an additional $1,302 in location pay.

Must Have Transcribed

To qualify, by the date of the test candidates must have a high school diploma and 18 months of general verbatim reporting experience or completed a formal program in court reporting and have one year in work-related experience. Part-time experience will be accepted on a pro-rated basis.

For appointment, candidates must have three years of general verbatim reporting experience. Various levels of education and experience are also considered qualifying; candidates should consult the exam notice for a complete list.

The test consists of two parts: a written exam and a dictation performance evaluation presented via video format. Candidates must pass each section. The written exam will count for 25 percent and the practical test will comprise 75 percent of the final score.

The written exam will test candidates' knowledge of English grammar usage, punctuation, and sentence structure as well as spelling, vocabulary, and understanding of legal and judicial procedures.

No Residency Standard

New York State residency is not required. There is a $25 non-refundable filing fee. Appointees must complete a one-year evaluation period, where they need to show proficiency in, and use of, computer-aided transcription.

Court Reporters record and transcribe testimony in formal and informal court settings such as trials, conferences, calendar calls, arraignments, and hearings. They may also be required to handle back office and courtroom clerical tasks, including processing forms related to case proceedings.

OCA is also currently accepting applications for exams leading to Administrative Services Clerk and Senior Administrative Services Clerk promotion positions. Filing for those tests is set to close Jan. 5.
