Fault Library on Pay

To the Editor:

I want to add my voice to that of newly elected Local 1930 President Carol Thomas that what is needed at the New York Public Library is "Pay fairness for all titles" (Dec. 15 story).

My administration pressured library management toward this goal for all titles, but management would only concede pay increases to some librarians. In our current contract, we won increases for incumbent Library Information Assistants. We are making gains title by title.

It is, after all, library management that has stood fast in its opposition to raising the salaries of NYPL library clerical workers who earn less than comparable titles in other public libraries and clerical titles in the city.

In the past, some in the local thought that Librarians should not accept management's offer to end the two-tier system for librarians at NYPL without increases for all. However, in the local's current bargaining, the entire bargaining committee has agreed that we should accept the offer of a wage increase for Library Information Assistants while we continue to fight for a living wage for all.

It is now up to President Thomas and her new executive board to carry on the struggle for pay fairness for all. All union members should join together for that goal.

LYNN TAYLOR, President, Local 1930, New York Public Library Guild, DC 37, AFSCME
