AVAILABLE Applications must be postmarked by Dec. 18. The written test is set for Jan. 20, 2007. The starting salary is $27,933. Individuals who are assigned to work in the five boroughs or in Nassau, Suffolk, Rockland or Westchester counties will receive an additional $1,302 downstate adjustment. Job Requirements To qualify, by the date of the written exam candidates must have a high school diploma or GED, and one year of library clerical experience. Individuals can also apply with 30 college credits, of which at least nine are in any combination of the following: library information science, computer applications, or informational processing. Appropriate part-time and volunteer experience, which can be verified, will be accepted on a pro-rated basis, according to the exam notice. New York State residence is not required. There is a $20 non-refundable filing fee. Library Clerk 2s supervise and oversee specialized clerical library activities, such as organizing and maintaining books, helping visitors locate information, maintaining and creating online databases, acquiring library materials, and shelving and rebinding books. They are in charge of one or more organizational units in the library, including Public Reader Services, which may involve circulations, interlibrary loans, special collections and periodicals, acquisitions, and technical services. The written exam will test candidates' abilities in basic computer-related concepts and terminology, arranging given information into specified groups, and understanding and interpreting written material. The exam will also evaluate candidates' skills in establishing effective working relationships with patrons as well as library record-keeping. The passing score is 70 percent. The positions exist statewide, primarily at State University of New York campuses and at correctional facilities, according to the exam notice. Additionally, jobs are available in Albany at the Education Department, Health Department, Economic Development Department, and Attorney General's Office. Dec. 18 is also the last day to apply for exams leading to jobs as: Dairy Product Specialist Trainee I, Infection Control Nurse, Institution Steward, Land Use Training Specialist I, Land Use Training Specialist II, Motor Carrier Investigator, and Motor Vehicle Inspector.
