Hevesi's Blind Spot

To the Editor:

In his debate with his challenger for State Comptroller, J. Christopher Callaghan, Alan Hevesi said that his 35 years of public service should be considered in light of his "mistake" (Hevesi's word) in using a state employee to chauffeur his wife.

But this arguments cuts both ways. If his many years as a fiscal watchdog for the city and state don't lead him to know that using a phony security reason for illegally using a state employee for his own personal needs, Mr. Hevesi has serious ethical blind spots. His unethical conduct creates serious doubt about his character and his qualifications to judge the ethical conduct of others as the State Comptroller.
