Colangelo Wins Election For Top 246 Post

By HOWARD MEGDAL

Joseph A. Colangelo has retained the presidency of Service Employees International Union Local 246, as his slate swept the election by a nearly 2-to-1 margin.

Mr. Colangelo, who has served as president since predecessor James Hughes retired about a year into his term, was elected to the job for the first time, 969 to 559 for challenger Frank Roggio.

Deal Reassured Members

"We went through a difficult period with contract negotiations with the city," Mr. Colangelo said in an Oct. 20 interview. "But the majority of the contracts are resolved." He said only Sheet Metal Workers, Upstate Mechanics and Machinists, and Sign Painter/Letterers remain without new deals. The majority of his members approved a 74-month contract calling for a 15.9-percent raise last month, retroactive to April 1, 2002.

"Moving forward, I would look to resolving contracts before they're expired, so that members aren't left waiting for their increases," Mr. Colangelo said. "That's unacceptable to any union leader."

After first being elected shop steward of his local in 1991, Mr. Colangelo steadily moved up, and was elected vice president in 2003. Yet he never thought of the presidency as his likely destination.

"What I've always tried to do is help other people, help in any way I can. Getting involved in the union was just a part of that. I don't think you have [the presidency] as your goal. You just get into that position, based on the work that you do."

Colangelo Coattails

Others elected on Mr. Colangelo's slate, who was opposed by candidates supported by former local President Jack Friedman, were Vice President Charles Pastorelli over Pete Scordino, 961-566; Secretary/Treasurer Raymond Schacor over John Gabriele, 956-567; and Recording Secretary James Grillo over Robert Rossi, 956-565. Each victor assumed their position following Mr. Hughes's resignation, and were elected in their own right for the first time.

Winning re-election were Sentinel Philip Mazal over Tommie Sperrazza, 907-613 and Union Trustee John M. Cox over Anthony Cappello, 920-603.
