SUBWAY CAR MECHANIC POSITIONS ARE AVAILABLE

Child Protective, Fire Dispatcher Jobs Also Open; Car Insp. Pays $25 An Hour; Filing Ends Oct. 24

The Department of Citywide Administrative Services is accepting applications until Oct. 24 for an exam leading to Car Inspector jobs a New York City Transit. The practical test is expected to begin Feb. 14, 2007. The starting wage is $24.95 an hour. The eligible list resulting from the exam will also be used to fill Road Car Inspector vacancies. The starting pay for that position is $27.67 an hour.

160 Positions Open

NYC Transit has approximately 160 Car Inspector openings, said Richard Chazen, the agency's manager of examination administration. A total of 600 people have applied so far, he added.

Oct. 24 is also the last day to file for 10 other hiring exams and five promotion tests. The open-competitive titles are: Child Protective Specialist, Juvenile Counselor, Communication Electrician, Electrician (HHC and city agencies), Fire Alarm Dispatcher, Fire Protection Inspector, Industrial Hygienist, Railroad Stock Worker, Steam Fitter's Helper, and Traffic Device Maintainer.

The promotion exams are: Bus Maintainer, Group B; Communication Electrician, Electrician (HHC and city agencies); Light Maintainer, and Sergeant (NYPD).

For Car Inspector, by the last day of filing candidates must have six years of fulltime experience, of which four years must have been as a journeyman mechanic working from drawings.

Qualifying Work

That experience must include some work in the following areas: construction, installation, inspection, repair and/or maintenance of large or heavy-duty mechanical, electromechanical, or electronic equipment. Acceptable experience also includes troubleshooting and/or repair of multi-unit electrical railroad cars or diesel-electric locomotives. Various combinations of education and experience are considered qualifying; candidates should consult the exam notice for a complete list. Qualifying experience must have been obtained within the past 10 years.

The following types of experience are not acceptable: home electrician, copy machine mechanic, HVAC technician, electronic bench technician, auto body and fender mechanic, dealership make-ready mechanic, gas station attendant, salvage and junkyard mechanic, and automotive specialty work such as changing mufflers, windshield wipers, tires, and oil.

Candidates will be required to perform tasks that demonstrate their knowledge of mechanical systems by installing, testing and repairing such devices. Candidates must also be able to read and understand electrical and mechanical manuals and drawings as well as perform safe work practices and procedures. The passing score is 70 percent.

Car Inspectors and Road Car Inspectors may be required to work nights, weekends, and holidays. There is no city residency requirement.

Job Duties

Car Inspectors maintain, inspect, fix, examine, and paint NYC Transit subway cars. They also repair pneumatic brake equipment and air conditioning and heating gear systems.

Road Car Inspectors detect problems on subway cars and make the necessary repairs to keep them in service or enable them to be moved to siding or terminals. Appointees must have a driver's license. Individuals with serious moving violations or an accident record may be disqualified.
