Not Racial, Roger

To the Editor:

This is in response to the article in last week's paper about Roger Toussaint's campaign for re-election. Toussaint claims that his dictatorial style would be more accepted if he were a white man without an accent.

Nothing is further from the truth. Neither the color of Toussaint's skin nor his accent have anything to do with the avalanche of opposition he is now facing. Transit workers of all ethnicities, thousands of whom have accents, have rejected Roger Toussaint and his divide-and-conquer polices. Thousands of us have recognized that Toussaint is the cause of the divisiveness which is threatening the very survival of Local 100.

Does Roger Toussaint expect the world to believe that transit workers would be more tolerant of a white dictator than a Caribbean one? TWU Local 100 is no place for any dictator, no matter where they are born or how accented their speech. Poor, pitiful Roger. He single-handedly brought our union to the brink of ruin, and he blames everyone but himself when he is challenged for being the failure that he is.

CHARLES JENKINS, Chair, Line Equipment Division, TWU Local 100
