Help Ill Firefighters

To the Editor:

Practically every week the Letters to the Editor contain the same subject matter: "Hiring Standards for the FDNY." Does anyone have any concerns for the firemen who are currently working light duty forever due to illnesses and injuries received from 9/11?

Having to go through lawsuits and trial litigation after serving this city on its darkest day and during the rescue and recovery process that followed is shameful and ridiculous. Why are the brothers who were down at Ground Zero on 9/11, survived both building collapses, helped save survivors, and continued with the rescue and recovery for months thereafter fighting for a 3/4 pension that they deserve without a question? I thought we took care of our brothers. There are dozens, if not hundreds of firefighters today who worked on 9/11 currently having physical problems (respiratory, breathing, etc.), but don't want to have their ailments addressed so they can fall into the same malaise of "light duty.'' With their luck, their duty status would probably be determined in the court also.
