for Legal Clerk Positions The written exam is set for Nov. 4. Applications must be postmarked by Oct. 5. The starting salary ranges from $41,728 to $49,864. Job Criteria To qualify, applicants must be residents of the City of Yonkers for at least one year prior to appointment. Before the written test, candidates must have either graduated from a recognized secretarial school with specialization in legal work, or possess a high school diploma and one year of secretarial experience and six months' experience in the legal field. Individuals with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience outlined in the exam notice can also apply. The written test is designed to evaluate candidates' knowledge of the proper use of grammar, punctuation, and spelling. The test will also gauge individuals' skills in word-processing, keyboarding practices and proof-reading. The exam will also include questions on legal terminology, documents, and forms, as well as office record-keeping and spelling. During the test, candidates can use quiet hand-held calculators. The following devices are not allowed: spell-checkers, personal digital assistants, address books, language translators, and dictionaries. In addition, books and other reference materials are not allowed. Legal Secretaries operate a computer station and occasionally use a typewriter. Their work includes preparing legal briefs, petitions, motions, orders, opinions and other legal documents. They also proofread documents, file records, and arrange vouchers for settlements and judgments. There is a $15 filing fee.
