APPLY UNTIL SEPT. 26 FOR POLICE 911 POSTS
Start at $27G; Experience With Public Helpful; Car Insp., Architect, Health Advisor Also Open

The Department of Citywide Administrative Services is accepting applications for an exam leading to Police Communication Technician positions.

The multiple-choice test is set for Dec. 9. The starting salary is $27,637. Applications must be submitted by Sept. 26.

That is also the last day to file for the following jobs: Car Inspector, Public Health Advisor, Assistant Architect, University Assistant Architect, Assistant Landscape Architect, and Glazier.

911 Tech Standards

For Police Communication Technician, by the last day of filing candidates must have a high school diploma and one year of clerical experience. Candidates with 30 college credits, a year of experience in dealing with the public, or two years of active military duty may also qualify for the position.

Candidates must be city residents within 90 days of appointment. Individuals who speak Spanish are urged to apply. They may be selectively certified and given preferred consideration for positions requiring that ability.

Police Communication Technicians work as 911 emergency call-takers for the Police Department Communications Section. They obtain necessary information from callers in order to initiate emergency assistance. Speaking calmly and clearly is essential in order to elicit information.

The test may include questions on understanding and remembering written information, communicating information to another person, recognizing problems, and combining separate pieces of data to form a general conclusion. The exam will also gauge candidates' abilities to apply general rules to a specific situation, understand the order in which things should be done, and quickly combine details into a meaningful pattern.

Other Tasks

It will also require applicants to identify an object in its surroundings, recognize where they are in relation to the space they are in, and use a map or diagram to get from one position to another. In addition, individuals must be familiar with basic New York City geography, including major roadways, landmarks, bridges, tunnels and parks. The passing score is 70 percent.

Further information and copies of the exam notice are available online at www.nyc.gov/dcas or by writing the DCAS Application Center, 18 Washington St., New York, N.Y. 10004.
