CALL CENTER REP JOBS BEING OFFERED BY CITY

Start At $25G; First Filing For New Position; Jobs Also Available As Car Inspector, Thermostat Fixer

The city is accepting applications for an exam leading to the new Call Center Representative job, the Department of Citywide Administrative Services said. Applications must be submitted by Aug. 22. That is also the last day to file for an exam leading to Thermostat Repairer positions. Filing is open until Sept. 26 for Car Inspector jobs.

Exam Nov. 18

The Call Center Rep starting salary is $24,994. The pay increases to $27,138 after completion of training and one year of service. The multiple-choice test is set for Nov. 18.

To qualify, by the last day of filing candidates must have a bachelor's degree or an associate's degree and one year of full-time experience providing information or customer service to the public.

Various other combinations of work-related experience and education qualifications are also considered qualifying; individuals should check the exam notice for a complete listing.

The multiple-choice exam will test candidates' abilities to understand written information, combine separate pieces of data to form a general conclusion, and apply general rules to a specific situation. The test will also gauge candidates' skills in understanding the order in which things should be done, writing precise reports, and creating accurate records of information exchanged with a caller. The passing score is 70 percent.

Practical Test, Also

Candidates who pass the written test must also successfully complete a qualifying practical test on a date to be announced. That test will assess candidates' proficiency in navigating multiple computer systems using a keyboard and a mouse. Candidates will also be given a call-taking scenario. In order to pass, individuals will be required to obtain the appropriate information from the simulated caller, navigate to the correct Web page, access the requested information, and transmit the data to the caller.

Individuals who speak Spanish may be selectively certified and given preferred consideration for positions requiring that ability.

Appointees will work in the city's 311 Call Center responding to phone inquiries from the public. They provide customer service information to callers, and take complaints and service requests and forward them for further action and enter them into computer systems. The starting salary for Car Inspector is $24.95 an hour. The practical exam is expected to begin Feb. 14, 2007, DCAS said. Individuals who pass that test will also be used to fill vacancies in the title of Road Car Inspector title.

To qualify, by the last day of filing candidates must have six years of work-related experience. Persons should consult the exam notice for the complete listing of acceptable mechanic experience and educational degrees which can be used to substitute for that requirement.

Job Responsibilities

Appointees will be inspect and repair New York City Transit subway cars and other equipment. They may be required to work nights, weekends, and holidays.

Starting pay for Thermostat Repairer is $42.41 an hour. The multiple-choice test is scheduled for Dec. 2. To qualify, candidates must have five years of work-related experience.

Separate filing is open for jobs in city agencies, the City University of New York, and the Health and Hospitals Corporation.
