UFT Endorses Cuomo For Att'y General

By HOWARD MEGDAL

The United Federation of Teachers last week endorsed Andrew Cuomo in his bid for State Attorney General.

"He's a believer in economic and social justice and a firm backer of public education," UFT President Randi Weingarten said in a statement. "From initiating programs targeted to improving the life chance of poor children to demanding pay equity for Teachers and jumpstarting the Teacher Next Door program that offers educators housing discounts so they can afford to stay in New York City, Andrew Cuomo will use his office to see that schools have the resources and support they need to be safe, healthy, first-rate educational institutions."

Will 'Fight for Teachers'

Mr. Cuomo said in a statement, "I am honored to have the support of New York City Teachers who work day in and day out to ensure our children have the brightest futures. Our children rely on the talent and dedication our educators bring to the classroom. As Attorney General, I will fight for our Teachers so they can continue to help our children thrive and reach their greatest potential."

Mr. Cuomo holds a wide lead over his opponents for the Democratic nomination in opinion polls. He is being challenged in the Sept. 12 primary by, among others, former Public Advocate Mark Green.
