Warn Public Of Social Security E-Mail Scam

The U.S. Social Security Administration last week warned of an e-mail scam in which someone is trying to gain access to other people's Social Security numbers and bank information.

The e-mail message, according to Social Security Commissioner Jo Anne Barnhart, is addressed, "Dear Social Security Number and Card owner" and states that "someone illegally is using your Social Security number and assuming your identity."

Solicits Financial Data

It directs readers to a Web site that is designed to look like the official one for Social Security. When they log on to the Web site, individuals are asked to confirm their identities by providing their Social Security numbers "and bank information," and credit card and personal identification numbers are requested. Commissioner Barnhart emphasized in a statement, "Whether on our on-line Web site or by phone, Social Security will never ask you for your credit card information or your PIN number."

Patrick O'Carroll Jr., the Inspector General for the SSA, said, "You should never provide your Social Security number or other personal information over the Internet or by telephone unless you are extremely confident of the source to whom you are providing the information."

Mr. O'Carroll is investigating the scam and has been ordered by Ms. Barnhart to prosecute whoever is responsible. Those with information can contact his office's hotline at 1-800-269-0271. Those who are deaf or hard of hearing can call 1-866-501-2101.
