THE BEST VS. THE BRAVEST

 

The Chief-Leader/Michael O'Kane THE BEST VS. THE BRAVEST: Gold Medal Olympian and World Cup Soccer Champion Mia Hamm pursues a loose ball with Firefighter Michael Meagher at a May 20 exhibition match at St. John's University in Queens. Helping Ms. Hamm take on the FDNY Soccer Team were fellow Olympians Kristine Lilly, Julie Foudy and Joy Fawcett, backed by alumni from the St. John's women's soccer team. Proceeds from the 3-3 tie went to the Sergio G. Villanueva Soccer Foundation and Scholarship Fund, which gives an annual scholarship to two St. John's students. Firefighter Villanueva, a former team member, died on 9/11. Showing their support for the FDNY players were the United Women Firefighters, who also took the opportunity to extol the virtues of the job to the young female soccer fans in attendance.
