Local 1180 To Represent HHC Coord. Mgrs.

By HOWARD MEGDAL

Communications Workers of America Local 1180 has won the right to represent more than 1,300 Coordinating Managers with the city's Health and Hospital Corporation under a ruling by the Office of Collective Bargaining's Board of Certification.

Local 1180 filed a petition on behalf of the employees in 1994, while the HHC maintained that the positions were managerial.

'Thrilled' to Have Them

"We're thrilled to welcome the Coordinating Managers into our union," Local 1180 president Arthur Cheliotes said in a statement. "We look forward to helping our new members improve their working lives."

Following the petition, Local 1180 and HHC met with OCB repeatedly, with nearly every job reviewed. OCB found that just 18 positions should be classified as managerial, with another 35 labeled confidential jobs and therefore exempt from union representation. According to Local 1180 Vice President Linda Jenkins, the first change the union will demand is paid overtime for Coordinating Managers, who will also now have the right to file grievances.

Local 1180 now represents more than 9,000 city workers.
