Pioneer ADA Is Given Her Due

A plaque honoring Eunice Roberta Hunton Carter, the first African-American woman to serve as a prosecutor in New York State, was unveiled by Manhattan District Attorney Robert M. Morgenthau May 3.

Ms. Carter began serving as an Assistant District Attorney during the 1930s, heading its Abandonment and Special Sessions bureaus. She also worked with State Special Prosecutor Thomas E. Dewey during his investigation of public corruption and organized crime, and played a key role in the prosecution of infamous Mafia boss Charles "Lucky" Luciano.

Her grandson, Stephen L. Carter, who is a Law Professor at Yale Law School, took part in the ceremony at the Manhattan DA's Offices.
