THE CHIEF-LEADER welcomes letters from its readers for publication. TWU OUTRAGE TWU Outrage
The effort by TWU Local 100 President Roger Toussaint to re-do the vote on a contract that was rejected by the membership is an outrageous attack upon the essential basis of democracy, which is majority rules. The contract was voted on fairly and squarely and it should now be a dead issue. If the contract were approved, would the losing side be given an opportunity to have another vote? This is one more sad and shameful example of the arrogance, intolerance and bullying tactics of President Toussaint's term in office. Furthermore, what message does this send to the MTA: that they only have to hang tight on a proposed contract and sooner or later the union will come on its hands and knees to accept it? This re-do sets a dangerous precedent, and those of us who feel it is important to have a democratic union should make a determined effort to stop it. President Toussaint has to get the message that the contract is dead and ought to be given a decent burial. Grab a shovel, Roger. RICHARD LAURIE, Conductor, New York City Transit |
