Salary $34,396 To Start; Need College Degree; Jump to $38G After A Year; No Test For Position


The state Department of Civil Service is accepting applications for an evaluation leading to Insurance Examiner Trainee I jobs.

The starting salary is $34,396, with a $1,264 location pay differential for those assigned to work in the city, Nassau, Suffolk, Rockland, or Westchester counties. Candidates will be graded based on education and experience. There is no written test or application fee.

Where Jobs Are

The State Insurance Department has an ongoing need for qualified candidates. There is a large number of positions available in the city, according to a state personnel official. There are also jobs available upstate in Buffalo, Syracuse, and Mineola, according to the exam notice.

Individuals who expect to graduate with a bachelor's degree within nine months and who have completed 16 credits in accounting or auditing may apply.

To be appointed, candidates must have a bachelor's degree with 24 credits in accounting or auditing. Business law and accounting information systems courses do not fulfill the requirement. Appropriate part-time and volunteer experience will be accepted on a pro-rated basis. Applicants with one year of accounting experience may also qualify for the Trainee II title. State residency is not required.

Field, Office Slots

Insurance Examiner Trainees are assigned to field or office positions. Appointees working in the field perform bank reconciliations, test unearned premium reserves, examine stocks and bonds, and review other facets of insurance companies to determine their financial condition and their treatment of policyholders. They are required to travel. Trainees assigned to office positions review annual statements, investigate violations and complaints against licenses, and examine underwriting and rating practices.

Applications are rated continuously. Scores will be based on candidates' college transcripts and work-related experience. Qualified candidates may reapply once a year.

All the traineeships are for two years. After the first year, Trainees who successfully meet the standards advance to the Trainee II title, which pays $38,470.
