THE CHIEF-LEADER welcomes letters from its readers for publication. Cheap Hit on Bravest Cheap Hit on Bravest
I was upset, but not surprised, by the letter sent to The Chief from Mr. Cy Horowitz in the Dec. 23 issue (Sees Writing on Wall). As a Fire Captain with 20 years in the department, and the son of a Fire Lieutenant with over 35 years on the job, I assure Mr. Horowitz we didn't join the department because of the beds. My father worked for over 20 years in Brownsville during the '60s and '70s and didn't get much use out of them. I've also always worked in busy companies and spent many a night watching the sunrise at a fire scene. I am content that we have done well and have given this city plenty of our blood and sweat. I'm not too concerned about finding busy work, as responses by our department are at an all-time high citywide. What I would like to know from Cy, who has a deep interest in the FDNY, is how many Chanukahs and Passovers he spent away from his family, how many weekends he spent at the office, and how many times his head didn't hit the pillow by the end of the 10 o'clock news? Not many, Mr. Horowitz? You mean none, Mr. Horowitz. You must have been a bean-counter ( I mean accountant) for the City Comptroller's Office. MICHAEL F. GALA Jr., Captain, FDNY |
